RESEARCH PROJECTS

 

·         “Analysis of discussion board entries from one online course”

Analyzed discussion board entries from a Master’s Level course on writing. Investigating interaction and rapport among instructors and participants. 14 participants and over 200 pages of transcripts. Created a list of effective protocols to put into place in online courses in order to facilitate interaction and rapport. Summer, 2006

 

·         “Analysis of Parent, Teacher, and Student survey of Reading Recovery Practices in Conroe, Texas”

Surveyed and used SPSS and Ethnograph to analyze 350+ parents, teachers, and

students’ surveys concerning their experiences with the Reading Recovery program in

Conroe, TX. Created a cost analysis of the program and facilitated the local school board

in the decision-making process whether to retain the program. Focused on the stance of

oral language during the reading recovery lessons.  Spring, 2005

 

·     “The Characteristics of Veteran Teachers”

Surveyed and used SPSS and Ethnograph to analyze 95 novice and veteran teachers’

survey’s in order to discern reasons why teachers stay in the teaching profession. Fall

2003 -- Spring, 2005

 

·     "Negotiating the Real and the Ideal:  A Case Study of Four Teachers in Literacy Learning

                    Opportunities in Elementary Language Arts Teaching"

 

Observed and interviewed four fourth-grade teachers, interviewed 12 students, analyzed the range of differences in the teachers' ideal and enacted literacy curricula. Used Ethnograph to analyze the transcript data. Fall, 1999 – Fall, 2001

 

·     "Like Pushing String:  An Ethnography of One Fourth-Grade Class"

 

Observed and analyzed audio-tape transcripts of 14 reading lessons in one fourth-grade classroom, described teacher and student interaction patterns. Fall, 2000

 

·     "Inquiry, Classroom Participation, and Personal Experiences:  Discussion in Class"

 

Audio-taped six 45-minute discussions and interviewed three key participants, analyzed oral discussion transcripts. Spring, 2000

 

·     "Sense in the Nonsense"

 

Focused on a six-year-old's vocalizations during play periods audio-tape recorded and transcribed six play episodes, analyzed meaningful interactions between physical actions and words used as a story line. Fall, 1999

 

·     "Discourse Analysis:  Uncovering the Pearl"

 

Clarified and described discourse as data in studying social discursive practices in classrooms and communities. Spring, 1999

 

·         "Gender Slippage and Expected Stereotypes:  What a Fourth-grader Already Knows about Gender"

 

Focused on fourth-graders' narrative writing in relation to gender, gathered and analyzed written data from 24 fourth-grade students. Fall, 1999

 

·     Bilingual Assessment Project

 

Tutored a fourth-grade, bilingual student for one semester, bi-weekly, designed a two-part assessment: performance-based and traditional, described students' reading progress through the course of one semester by analyzing all reading assessments and daily work. Spring, 1998
